In the fast-paced life of urban areas, weather forecasting isn't just a convenience—it's a necessity. From deciding whether to carry an umbrella to planning a weekend getaway, the accuracy and detail provided by weather apps can significantly impact daily routines. Ventusky stands out with its comprehensive features designed specifically for the urban commuter, the fitness enthusiast, the family planner, or anyone navigating city life. Let's have a look at the most important uses and features the service offers for your city life.
General forecast
One of the most crucial aspects for city dwellers is the ability to predict short-term weather conditions accurately. Ventusky offers detailed hourly and daily forecasts, allowing users to plan their day with confidence. There are two approaches Ventusky offers to quickly check the upcoming conditions:
1. The Charts view along with the meteograms
This is probably the fastest way to see the coming days' overview. Either pull the bottom bar up and see the classic tabular forecast with the icons, or tap the bottom right Charts button. This will bring up the display that neatly shows the main metrics like rain, wind or temperature within one chart. Tap on the coming days and see their hourly forecast.
2. Timeline swiping
When it's feasible to view the bigger picture use maps. Pick the metrics of interest, like temperature for example and swipe through the timeline in the bottom. This way it's easy to see the development of the overal situation.
Precipitation and thunderstorms
Ventusky’s live radar and satellite images are invaluable for urban users. The radar shows real-time precipitation data, helping you see exactly where rain is falling and its movement. This feature is particularly useful during unpredictable weather, ensuring you're prepared for sudden downpours or avoiding areas where the rain is heaviest.
It is important to note the difference between the Radar and Precipitation layers: Radar shows live actual data as served by radar stations around the world. Thus what you see is the momentary situation plus history. You can only go an hour into the future, the prediction shows the most probable development based on winds and AI.
The precipitation layer however is a model. This means it is computed by various weather data providers (NOAA, DWD and others) and displays the anticipated future situation. Contrary to the Radar, it is computed and can vary with different prediction models. On the other hand it offers a much longer view into the future, mostly by 14 days. It's sometimes a good practice to turn on the Model Switching in the settings and switch between different models. The more they agree on the probability of rain, the more likely it is to really rain.
This means, if you want to know whether there is a chance of rain next week, you should use the Precipitation layer, while if you're interested in the immediate rainfall, the radar will do the trick.
A great feature directly connected to the stormy weather is Ventusky's ability to display real-time lightning strikes on the radar map. We help you to keep safe and observe the nature's theatre from the safety of your home.
Sun and temperature
The temperature layer provides data on current temperatures and allows users to view temperature variations at different altitudes, ensuring accurate readings across the cityscape. During the hot summer months, this layer can help you plan your day to avoid peak heat hours, ensuring you stay cool and hydrated. Conversely, in the winter, it aids in preparing for the cold by indicating the best times to venture out or ensuring you dress warmly enough for the commute. For those planning activities like jogging or cycling, knowing the exact temperature can help you choose the best time to exercise, optimizing performance and comfort.
The cloud coverage layer is equally essential, especially for activities that rely on clear skies. This layer shows the density and height of clouds at different altitudes, which is particularly useful for outdoor events and photography. For instance, if you're planning a picnic or a family outing to the park, checking the cloud coverage ensures that you can pick a day with minimal cloud cover for optimal enjoyment and better lighting. Additionally, for evening activities like stargazing or attending outdoor concerts, this layer helps you avoid disappointment by choosing nights with clear skies. By combining insights from both the temperature and cloud coverage layers, urban dwellers can make well-informed decisions, enhancing their daily activities and overall urban experience.
AQI
Air quality is a significant concern in urban areas. Ventusky provides detailed air quality information, including concentrations of pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and O3. The app’s AQI layer helps users understand the air quality in their area, allowing them to take necessary precautions, such as reducing outdoor activities on days with poor air quality.
If you or a family member has respiratory issues, checking the AQI before planning outdoor activities is crucial. On days with poor air quality, you might decide to stay indoors or choose a different location with better air conditions.
Winter: Snow and freezing rain
The app's temperature layer shows precise readings, enabling you to prepare for the frigid conditions by dressing warmly and planning your outdoor activities accordingly. The precipitation layer is particularly useful during winter, as it distinguishes between different types of precipitation. For instance, freezing rain, which can make roads and sidewalks treacherously slippery, is marked with exclamation marks on the map, providing an immediate visual alert. This feature helps urban commuters and pedestrians stay safe by avoiding areas where freezing rain is predicted or already occurring.
Ventusky also excels in snow prediction, offering insights into both current and future snowfall. The snow cover layer provides information about the total height of the snow as well as new snow expected in the area. This is especially helpful for city planners, commuters, and anyone involved in winter sports or outdoor activities. By checking the snow prediction maps, you can plan snow removal, adjust travel plans, or decide on the best times for skiing and other winter activities. The app's ability to forecast snow up to two weeks in advance ensures that you are well-prepared for upcoming snowstorms, making winter in the city more manageable and less stressful.

For those who need quick updates, Ventusky’s customizable widgets are a game-changer. Available in various sizes, these widgets provide real-time weather information directly on your home screen. You can choose to display current conditions, hourly forecasts, or even live radar images, ensuring you always have the latest weather data at your fingertips. These notifications are designed to be both timely and relevant, helping you make informed decisions without needing to constantly check the app.
Webcams
Sometimes, seeing is believing. Ventusky integrates over 30,000 webcams from around the world, offering live views of current weather conditions. Urban users can check webcams in their city or any location they plan to visit. This feature is particularly useful for verifying conditions in real-time, such as checking for fog or ensuring the streets are clear before heading out.
